fHp BITTE EIN BIT ! 3.6
q 22. April 1989
... some brief hints about "BITTE EIN BIT !", international version:
- The name was taken from a German beer-commercial ("Bitburger Bier")
and means something like "A Bit, please !".
- BIT is the ultimate disk-backup-program. It is easy to use
and even faster than any commercial software.
- BIT copies all UNPROTECTED disks with up to 90 tracks and up
to 11 sectors per track.
- BIT uses special disk-I/O-routines to obtain maximum speed.
These routines were taken from the book
p "SCHEIBENKLEISTER, Massenspeicher am ST" q,
whose author Claus Brod kindly allowed me to use the FDC-
routines in my program.
- In case of an error, BIT first tries to access the disk with
the regular TOS routines. Only if this fails too, BIT will
display an error message.
- BIT can ignore unoccupied tracks while reading and writing to
obtain a still higher performance. This option always
works correctly, it only has to be switched off, when the
program asks for that explicitly.
- BIT can format disks in the most customary formats. The disks
are thereby formatted IBM-compatible, so you can use them with
Atari computers and IBM-compatible computers at the same time.
- BIT can display directories and disktypes (diskformats) of
physical disks and of the virtual disk in the copy buffer as well !
- BIT can change the format of a disk during the copying process
( you can for example read a single-sided disk and write it to
the destination as a double-sided one). To do that, use the
"Change format"-button in the "Extended options"-menu and fix
the desired disk-format in the dialog below. It is of course your
task to take care that there is enough memory capacity on the
destination disk to store all data from the source. This is the
only case in which the "Ignore unused tracks"-button must NOT be
activated.
- For disks without a legal bootsector or disks with incorrect
bootsector-data the option "Fix format" is assumed. The handling
is identical with "Change format".
- The "Create fastloaddisk" in the same menu works only with
disks with sector-numbers less than 10. It does not have to be
deactivated while copying disks with 10 or 11 sectors. When the
button is active, all disks are formatted in a special format,
which e.g. loads NRSC.PRG from a single-sided 9-sector disk in
14 seconds instead of the regular 20 seconds !
- The "Format destination"-button should only be activated when
the destination disk is definitely unformatted or if you wish
to convert into fastload-format. Unnecessary formatting takes time
and in case formatting should be indispensable, BIT will tell you.
- The copy-/format-process can be interrupted by pressing both
<SHIFT>-keys. Use this feature to erase a disk in just a few
seconds: Format the disk with the "Format disk"-button and
cancel after the second track is displayed. The disk will now
be reinitialized.
- Every time a disk is written, BIT changes the serial-number
and recalculates the checksum to aviod "media-change"-trouble.
- BIT checks out the number of physical diskdrives.
- BIT supports all TOS - versions, including all future releases.
( Let me know, if any trouble occurs with some country-specific
TOS-versions. BIT was develloped with German TOS. )
- BIT works with mid and high resolution, monochrome monitor
recommended.
- BIT is both accessory and executable application in one. Simply
rename it to BIT36.PRG to use it as an application, rename it to
BIT36.ACC and reboot the system to use it as an accessory.
- BIT does not need a resource file.
- BIT is also available in the original German version.
- BIT is SHAREWARE. Send money, if you like ! German Marks,
Swiss Franks, English Pounds (and American Dollars) accepted.
Don't forget to let me know the version number you use, I will
send you an update, in case your version isn't the latest.
